Buying Used Gold Mining Equipment in NZ: A Buyer’s Guide

If you’re looking at used gold mining equipment in NZ — a dredge, a sluice, a detector, or just a pan and shovel to get started — this page used to be our classifieds board. It isn’t one anymore. Shipping costs make new gear expensive to bring into New Zealand, so buying secondhand is often the sensible way in. This guide covers what to check on each type of gear before you hand over money, what wears out first, and where a “bargain” turns into a false economy.

Is Buying Used Gold Mining Equipment Worth It in NZ?

Usually, yes — new gear shipped to New Zealand carries import and freight costs that used local gear avoids entirely. A well-maintained secondhand dredge, sluice or detector can save you hundreds to thousands of dollars. The catch is inspection: gear that’s been run hard in NZ rivers hides its wear, and a cheap price on a worn-out unit isn’t a bargain.

What to Check Before Buying a Used Gold Dredge

Check engine hours and starting behaviour, the impeller for pitting or chipped vanes, hose and clamp condition, and whether the pontoons and sluice have been knocked about, patched or re-welded. A dredge that starts easily on the first or second pull and holds steady idle is a far better sign than a low advertised price.

Engine. Ask for hours if the seller has them, but treat the number as a guide, not a guarantee — a low-hour engine that’s sat unused for a season can have stale fuel, a gummed carburettor, or a seized ring. Start it cold if you can. Rough idle, excessive smoke, or reluctance to start are all repair costs you’re about to inherit.

Pump and impeller. The impeller is the part that wears fastest, especially in NZ’s gritty, gravel-heavy rivers. Pitting, chipped vanes, or a wobbly shaft mean reduced suction and a part that needs replacing soon. Ask when it was last replaced — sellers who’ve maintained a dredge properly usually know.

Hoses and clamps. Intake and discharge hose perish and crack with UV exposure and years in the water. Cracked hose, rusted clamps, or hose that’s gone stiff and brittle are cheap individually but add up, and a failure mid-dive is worse than an inconvenience.

Sluice and riffles. Check the dredge’s sluice box the same way you’d check a standalone one (below) — worn or missing riffles and degraded matting reduce recovery even if the rest of the dredge runs fine.

Flotation. Most dredges you’ll see here float on aluminium pontoons rather than inflatables, so what you’re checking is the metal and the welds — dents, work-hardened creases, corrosion around fittings, and any weld that’s been re-run or patched. A pontoon that’s been straightened after a hard knock rarely sits true again, and a dredge that doesn’t sit level works the sluice unevenly. Inflatables turn up mainly on small backpack units; on those, check for perished seams, patches, and whether they hold pressure overnight.

What to Check Before Buying a Used Sluice Box or Highbanker

Check the matting for UV degradation and gaps, the riffles for wear or rounding, and the box itself for warping or cracking — especially around the hopper and box joins. A sluice that’s spent seasons in the sun is the most common secondhand disappointment.

Matting. Miner’s moss and other trapping matting break down under UV and constant water flow. Check for stiffness, tears, or bald patches where the nap has worn flat — flat matting has lost most of its ability to trap fine gold, and it’s a cheap part to replace but a sign of how hard the unit’s been used.

Riffles and box condition. ABS plastic sluices (common on this site’s own equipment pages) resist rust but can crack or warp if left in direct sun for long periods when not in use — check the box is still square and the riffle sections seat properly, not sprung or bowed. Alloy and wooden boxes should be checked for rust, corrosion, and rot at the joins.

Highbanker-specific. A highbanker adds a pump, hopper and legs to the sluice. Check the pump the same way as a dredge pump (above), check the hopper for cracks around the water jets, and check the leg frame for rust — steel legs left wet between trips are a common weak point.

What to Check Before Buying a Used Metal Detector

Check the search coil for cracks or water ingress, the control box and cable connectors for corrosion, and — critically — whether the model is still supported by its manufacturer or dealer network. A detector with no available parts or service is a risk regardless of how cheap it is.

Coil. The coil is usually the first thing damaged — cracked housings, water ingress, or a loose cable connection all degrade sensitivity. Fully submersible coils should show no sign of moisture inside the housing when gently shaken.

Waterproofing. If you’re detecting in rivers, check the control box seals and battery compartment gasket, not just the coil. A detector rated waterproof when new can fail that rating years later if seals have perished — ask when (or if) it’s been serviced.

Obsolete models. This matters more than most buying guides mention. Before you buy a secondhand detector, check whether the manufacturer still exists and still supports the model. As one example directly relevant here: Tesoro Electronics — a brand we recommended for years, and still see on the secondhand market — permanently closed several years ago. Its famous factory lifetime warranty is no longer honoured by anyone, and spare parts now depend entirely on what other owners are willing to sell or salvage. A secondhand Tesoro can still be a perfectly good detector, but go in knowing that if it breaks, there’s no factory to send it to.

Batteries and electronics. Corroded battery terminals, a battery compartment that’s been left with old batteries in it, or a detector that won’t hold ground balance are all signs of either heavy use or long neglect. Ask to test it over a known target before buying if at all possible.

Pans and Hand Tools — What Actually Wears Out

Pans, classifiers, and hand tools are the lowest-risk secondhand buy — there’s very little to fail. Check plastic pans for UV brittleness and check the riffle grooves haven’t worn smooth, check classifier screens for torn or rusted mesh, and check any snuffer bottles or crevice tools for cracked seals.

Plastic gold pans degrade with UV exposure over years in the sun, becoming brittle and prone to cracking at the rim. The riffle grooves that trap gold can also wear smooth on a pan that’s seen heavy use, reducing its recovery even though it still looks fine. These are cheap enough new that a badly worn pan isn’t worth negotiating hard over — walk away and buy new if the riffles are gone.

What Counts as a Fair Used Price?

This is the one section of this guide we can’t fill in from research. There’s no public database of NZ secondhand gold-gear sale prices — Trade Me and Facebook Marketplace don’t publish historical sold prices, and the volume of listings is too thin for any free tool to establish a reliable range. Rather than invent a number, we’re flagging this as an open gap: real “what does a used 4-inch dredge actually go for in NZ right now” pricing is exactly the kind of field knowledge that comes from having actually bought and sold this gear, not from a search. Owner: if you can supply realistic price ranges by category from your own trading history, that’s the single highest-value addition this page can get — it’s the specific advantage a retailer competitor won’t publish.

When a Used Buy Is a False Economy

A used buy stops being a bargain the moment the repair bill catches up to the price difference against new. Three situations to watch for: a dredge needing a new impeller and hose and pontoon repair all at once, a sluice with matting and riffles both gone (near enough to buying a bare box), and a detector from a defunct brand with a damaged coil, since replacement coils for obsolete models can be as hard to find as the detector itself.

The test that works in practice: add up what you’d actually have to spend to bring the unit back to reliable working condition, and compare that total — not just the asking price — against the cost of buying new or buying a better-condition used unit. A “cheap” dredge that needs $400 of parts before it will hold in the current is not cheaper than a well-kept one for $400 more.

  • Dredge: engine starts easily cold, impeller unpitted, hoses supple not cracked, pontoons straight and welds sound, sluice riffles intact
  • Sluice/highbanker: matting still has nap (not flat or torn), box square and not warped, pump primes and runs steady, leg frame rust-free
  • Detector: coil dry and crack-free inside the housing, control box seals intact, model still supported by a manufacturer or NZ dealer, holds ground balance on test
  • Pans/hand tools: riffles not worn smooth, plastic not brittle, classifier mesh intact
